Abstract

An abridged history of advancements in wireless communications recalls some interesting and perhaps sometimes lesser known landmarks of wireless communications in the general, broader context. Attention is then turned to the evolution of electromagnetic wireless communications from Maxwell's prediction of electromagnetic waves to 1G. A brief summary of the generations of wireless standards from 1G to 4G is given. Questions are then raised about the feasibility of some aspects on the 5G wish list. In particular, the focus is on questioning whether substantial improvements in the number of suportable users can be achieved by 5G. This question is put into the context of the theme of the inaugural IEEE 5G Summit that was held at Princeton University, Rethink Fundamentals. We describe research being done in the Wireless Communications Theory Research Group of Academician Norman Beaulieu. This research is focused on rethinking fundamentals about the ways interference is managed and combated in wireless communications networks.                                                            

 Biography


Norman C. Beaulieu is an Especially Recruited (Ministerial) Thousand Talents Plan Research Professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications BUPT in Beijing, China. Educated at the University of British Columbia UBC, McGill University and the Technical University of Denmark, he is a Medalist of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, an IEEE Fellow, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, an NSERC E.W.R.Steacie Memorial Fellow, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology IET, and a Copernicus 哥白尼 Visiting Fellow (Italy). His research interests centre on the fundamental theory of wireless communications, including 5G, interference systems, cognitive radio, the modelling of wireless channels, applied probability theory, and simulation techniques.
